Roel Dobbe is a researcher, writer and consultant working at the intersection of advanced control & decision making systems, machine learning and societal implications. Dobbe received his PhD from UC Berkeley, where he invested most of his time in understanding these topics in the context of energy and power systems and infrastructure, as well as in systems biology and healthcare diagnostics. He joined the AI Now Institute to work and collaborate more explicitly across disciplines from social sciences, humanities and policy, as well as with industry, government and civil society to address the potential and new risks associated with the integration of data-driven technologies in safety-critical societal systems and infrastructure. Before and during his PhD, Dobbe gained experience in industry as a management consultant with A.T. Kearney, a researcher for the Dutch National ThinkTank, a data scientist with C3 IoT and as a researcher with the Lawrence Berkeley National Labs, one of the leading energy research labs in the US.
